Is there a good way to replace hood springs?

Post by mrtleavitt »

I bought brand new hood hinges for my 69 ford a few months ago and it already is sagging when I have it opened working on it. As most of know this is very annoying as you step away from the truck and smack your head on the latch. Is there a better way to change the springs besides a good pair of vise grips and a lot of man power?

I used my Craftsman robo grips. It's wasn't that hard to pull the springs back. Just make sure that they are hooked in to the back of the hinge good before you start that pulling. If not, BOING!!!

You can also use a big pry bar to hook and un hook them. Kinda like doing brake springs.

I think I read your post wrong. When I removed the springs I just used a flathead screwdriver.

I gave up on it and put a stick on the inner fender. Keeps the hood WIDE open.

I just put new springs on mine Monday. Getting the old ones off were easy since they we a bit on the weak side, but used a small pry-bar to put the new ones on. Hook the spring into the rear of the hinge first and make sure the orientation of the front half is correct to hook over the hinge. Hook the spring on the pry-bar and the other end over the hinge so that as you pry the spring hook will slide down the pry bar and "fall" into the hinge notch. Yes, it does take having the hood wedged fully open and put on gloves and eye protection. It's not too bad.

I used to do the stick thing for my hood. I still keep the stick under the hood just in case. The problem with that is it gets in the way and there is a chance that you will bump into the stick and the hood may give you an un-welcome pat on the back.

:yt: Scrap piece of 2x4 for the win! Same thing on my Sable, the gas springs are shot on that, too.
