another problem....

Post by layedout72 »

i know i know, once again your probably tired of my trials with this truck. i swear it's got a curse against me or something. anyways, i got my hub pushed back on, bearings all done up, got my new lugs pressed on, and bam..........disaster (or so it seems). the lugs pressed into the hub PERFECTLY FINE on the 5 ton press at the machine shop. I figure hm, should be fine, it didn't crack any metal on the hub, and didn't push any metal from the lug up towards the head or whatever of the lug. great. NOW! I get everything assembled, throw the drum on, not only does the drum not fit over the new pads (read: the old one slides on perfect) but, once I do get it on (its squeezing the pads to center) the LUGS!!!! wil not go through the rotor holes. Now, it's not the drum, the stock drum won't slide over them either.

WHATS THE DEAL!?!?! I swear the first decent offer I get, the truck is gone.

Dang Layedout...

Not sure what to tell ya on this one...
I've not had to have new studs pressed in before.
I have replaced bump brakes a few times...
If the star adjuster isn't screwed all the way in after you put new pads on, the drum won't fit. The old drum might fit because it is worn down more than the new drum.
Have you tried turning the drum backwards and seeing if it will go on that way... if not, I'd take the axel and the drum back to the shop that pressed the lugs in for you... they may have given you the wrong lugs

hopefully one of the other guys might have some insight on this...
good luck...

layedout72, the new shoes will move some on the backing plate. Make sure the star wheel is adjuster is as short as it gets. That self adjuster bar is in correct and seated completely.
Now the shoes can be moved up or down either singly or both you can check which shoe/s need to moved as you fit the drum on. 2nd the whole mess will rotate some, pivoting from the anchor pin. This may help with lining up the lug studs w/ holes in drum. For grins and giggles, try fitting the drum reversed over studs to make sure they are the correct drums.
Good luck
Wes

everything about the drums matches with the old ones. the hub hole is identical, and the holes match up when you put them front to front. But, none the less, I will take pics this morning for all to see. Just can't catch a break!!!

okay, so i think I figured it out, and it's stupidity on my part. When you pull the drums, you have to take the spindle nut off. This means the bearings, the spindle, and the drum come off as one pieece. In turn, this means that you lugs have to be pressed into the DRUM as well.

Sounds like the wrong hubs if the old drums won't line up either.

Hey Layed out...

I think I know what you are talking about now...

If I picture this right... from your discription, the drums are going on, but aren't seating all the way like they should.
I actually have had that problem before...

This is what worked for me...
With the drums on, even if they aren't seated all the way, step on the brake pedal a few times. That will center the brake shoe assembly to the drum. Then put your lug nuts on... you will probably only need to use 3 if it's half ton or 4 if 3/4. Tightening the lug nuts should press the drum home into the seated position. You may need to use a small pry bar or stout screwdriver across a couple of lugs to keep ithe drum from turning.

Good luck...
