Bendix Power steering gear box

Post by 65flat »

Can anyone tell me where I can find an input shaft seal for a Bendix style power gearbox ? NAPA kit 7218 does not have the seal I need in it. I believe the gearbox is off of a 66. I installed it on my 65 F250.
This is the second box I purchased. I got burned on the first one I bought off of eBay. Worm gear was toast. I did not realize that a seal could be so hard to find. I own two of these boxes now. Both are identical.(same input shaft seal) Were they all the same up to 72 ? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't believe you can.

Most of the companies that rebuild those boxes machine the cases for a different input and output shaft bushing and seals (and they still sometimes leak right away). Thats why a rebuild bendix box is almost $500 and a saginaw is $200

The bendix boxes are crap, other than being the same size as a manual box they have no advantage over a saginaw box, and the bendix boxes run hot. It really is less hassle to find a PS column or shorten your manual column.
Old trucks, like old computers are more fun. Is the web really fun? No but its utilitarian. Spitfire, Wildcat, Fidonet, QWK and door games were FUN. The new truck works and its pretty, but compared to a bumpside or dentside, it just isn't fun.

Ford part # C6TZ-3E500-A . Bendix master rebuild kit. And an add on transmission cooler from the bone yard does the trick.
Thanks for the input.

I have a 68 with a bendix gear. When it started to leak I put about 6-8 ozs of brake fluid in the P/S pump and if the seal is not chipped or cracked, just worn it will seal it up.
