Rims hitting disc brakes

Post by hdrider »

OK here's the deal. I swapped out the front twin I-beam with one from a 1975 donor truck. The rims I have are the gray spoked wheels from an 80's style Ford. They won't turn on that 75 front end. The rim hits the bolt that holds the caliper on. Now,is this common knowlege? Is there a fix. I guess I would'nt have thought the wheels from an 80's model would'nt fit on a 75, there was no problem when I had them on the 69 front end.
I always new some of the older rims would not fit an axel with disc brakes, but not the other way around. Any advice??? :? :?

How much interference is there? On the couple of disc-brake front-ends that I've removed, the calipers weren't held on with bolts, but more like a beveled Allenhead countersunk screw...so the installed height would only be about half of that of a standard bolt head. I did some searching but couldn't find a picture of one, but I can swing by the shop and get a shot of one if you need it.

Keith, now that you mention it I seem to remember working on some brakes like that. Today I will take out the bolt and see if the rim clears and let you know tonight.

Keith you were right. I took out the bolt and the wheel spun fine. I then went to the hardware store and bought the kinda bolt you were talking about. When I was in college years ago I worked at a Ford dealership and remembered the kinda bolt you were talking about.
So here's some pics. Thanks Paul

Good....glad you knew what I was talking about, because I swung by the shop after work tonight specifically to get a picture of one of those for you, but I could NOT find the darned things. I have one F250 disc brake setup still assembled in there, but those special screws had also been replaced at some point with regular bolts.

I don't know what happened to the pics. I'll have to try to post them again tommorrow.
Yes I did get the bolt at a hardware store. You have to remember I live in a small town in North Dakota and the guy who owns the hardware store has just about everything. It's probably not exactly the right bolt but its a flat head beveled bolt.
Can anybody see the pics??
Don't know what happened but now the pics are there!

Looks identical to what I was talking about. I'd have never guessed you'd have been able to find that in a hardware store either...but as long as you got it.

It's amazing what you can find in the old fashioned hardware stores. The ones that still SMELL like hardware stores!
Glad you found a bolt that fit. :)

hdrider, you have to be logged in to be able to see that there are attachments in a post.

We used to have an old-fashoned hardware store that had drawers and drawers of all kinds of nuts, bolts and screws.

Now our only choice is the big orange box.

We have Menards and Home Depot.
My five year old, Christopher, calls them the 'orange store' and 'the green store.'

We have one of those old family owned hardeware store/lumberyard. I am glad I live in a small town and Home Depot won't be moving in and putting them out of business. They never reprice anything and you can usually dig down in a bin and find some items with the old price. I was digging around in there last week and found one of those old hand crank bench grinders still new. Oh, and they also have those countersunk allen head bolts, in grade 8 no less.

I have another question regarding this bolt which holds the caliper. When the bolt is fully tighten down, there is still a small gap between the bevel of the bolt and the notch in the intermediate piece. Is this correct or should the bolt tighten the intermediate piece? :hmm:
