Sheet Metal Gauges

I work at a metal fabrication shop and have access to scrap metal. My question is: What is a common gauge that would work good in patching various areas of the truck?

When I was welding up the fuel filler hole in my cab, I cut off a small chunk of the sheetmetal to measure it with a micrometer, and it's .031, which is 22-gauge steel.

is this like wire smaller means bigger?
