12*2 to 12*2.5 brake conversion

My 71 Sport Custom has :cry: 2 inch brakes. I want to convert to 2 1/2 inch brakes is this possible? What besides shoes and drums would need changed? Your :2cents: would be appreciated.

I think you will need everything from the backing plates out. Except the hubs themselves, I'm sure they're the same.

I am not for sure, but I think you need the axles too.

what's different about the backing plates? wouldn't you just need longer shoe pins? i would think the axles would be the same length too, just the drum casting would be different, but i'm just thinking out loud...

I believe the backing plates are inset more to allow for the extra drum width. The axles are all the same in 16 spline D60's from the same vintage. The change was in mid 1969 when ford went from studs with taper locks to just bolts holding the axles to the hub.

My 350 uses Taper locks but my 250 uses bolts. I am all for bolts. I am getting a set of 2.5 backing plates to try the conversion so after I get them I will have an answer.
