302 Power Steering Belt configuration

Post by Chasbod »

I've got all the stuff to add power steering to my 302 but haven't bolted it up yet.

So far I've heard 2 different stories on the belt configurations. All I have right now is a single belt, Main>Water pump>Alternator.

1st Configuration: The power steering pulley will have a belt by itself and the original Main>Water Pump>Alternator remains the same.

2nd Configuration: The power steering pump will share the water pump pulley instead of the alternator. But if this were to happen, then my alternator would have to be offset.

Which is correct?

I've tried to look at some pics of trucks for sale but most don't show the actual setup.

Any clarification is appreciated.

Both the 302s I've had in bumpside trucks have the same belt routing: one belt goes between the main pulley, PS pump and water pump, the other goes between the main pulley and the alternator. Here's a couple pics for reference. The alternator is removed, but you get the idea:

Thanks very much!

I guess the only thing that I'm still confused on is what happens to the alternator if it is currently inline w/ the water pump pulley. Do I need some offset bushings to move it forward or is there a different water pump pulley which moves the location of the belt back?

I bet the water pump pulley is different and the alternator stays in the same configuration.

So, I am missing the correct water pump pulley then.
