Questions about powder coating?

Post by gmcjimmy88 »

I have not done any or had anything coated but was wondering if it can be done over body filler? I would assume so but not sure. ANyone know any benefits other than durability? I am sure I will edit this later with more questions but this is good for now. Thanks for any help.

No, standard body filler will melt when the powdercoated part gets put into the oven used to cure the powdercoating.

You could probably use some kind of steel filler, but I've never looked into what could be used.

Well that sucks! I was thinking of having my frame down when I get everything torn down but I want the frame to be smooth so maybe I will just have to be really careful welding and grinding. :D

There is an aluminum based body filler that is made for being under powdercoating that works well.

The problem with standard body filler is that it is non-conductive, and the electrostatic process used to apply the 'powder' dosn't work.

USC's All-metal is advertised as powdercoatable, but I've never had any luck with it. Are you building your truck for show? Powdercoat will hide many imperfections.

Originally I was not planning on building for show. I have changed my mind now thiough, with the paint scheme I have decided on I just think the paint will look way to nice to not have the frame/ underside and the engine bay look good too. So I guess I am going for a show look, but nothing extreme. I have also decided to build my other 67 for a driver (don't tell my wife yet she still thinks it is a parts truck :D )!

Thanks for the information about the conductive body filler. I will have to check into the price of it. I may just end up painting the frame.

I am watching how this turns out. If you look at mine in my project updates page, I will give you a little advice. Go EASY with the grinder. I filled a bunch of 1/4 inch holes, only to end up with silver dollar sized low spots when I got grinder happy. So I think mine will be getting a skim coat and por 15 probably.
