I have heard that the rear brakes of an Explorer will work but I have never tried. On a truck the drums in the rear only take about 20% of the braking under an empty panic type stop. So unless you want the cool factor or are hauling a load they are probably not needed.

heres a setup on ebay. not a bad price. i would find out what the parts are so you can replace them when they wear out. you could do yourself, just need to fab some caliper mounts.

Do you have a booster? They help a TON! also might want to replace the rubber lines if they are old. They can swell and restrict the flow.

I am going to look at a Explorer next time I an out at the yard.

If it's actually stopping power you want and not for the 'cool' factor, I'd seriously check into getting a Hydroboost setup to replace your factory vacuum booster. There's a difference of night and day, and you can do it with junkyard parts...so the price is a lot more manageable than adding discs to the rearend. I have to agree, adding rear discs isn't really going to help your braking as much as you think.

Just do a search for 'hydroboost' here, it's been discussed quite a bit.

they have hydroboost on ebay. i have one coming somday. been almost a month but he said he would ship it this week. keith is right about the disc brakes. if you upgrade to disc and ony have one piston calipers its not going to improve as much as if you add 4 or 6 piston calipers. i think they even have 8 piston ones now. i was wondering about the magazine truck. 13" slotted and drilled rotors, gm 1 piston calipers. i would try the hydroboost and work your way from there. one guy here put in bigger bore wheel cylinders.
