spare tire under bed

Post by pasty63 »

Is there an easy way to mount the spare under the bed where it belongs? The original owner of my truck put on an adjustable rear bumper to accommodate his camper, and chucked the spare mount in the process. I was thinking I'd span the upper frame rails with a crossmember and drop a long bolt from the top. Then I'd push the wheel center of the spare up over the bolt and cinch it up tight with a piece of 1/4" plating backed with a large washer and an appropriate nut.

Wouldn't it be simpler to go to a boneyard and gather the correct hardware?

it would unless the adjust bumper would get caught up on it.

but if your gonna go without the camper perhaps you can leave the adjust where it is and do either the crossmember bolt washer idea or go and grab a good spare tire setup.

Yeah I was thinking that but wouldn't it get caught up with the spare tire too?

Here's how it's supposed to mount if this helps.

Thanks for the pics. The adjustable bumper will definitely interfere with the stock arrangement. I don't need the adjustable feature, and the lower part of the channel that it's attached to has been bent downward from someone backing into something -the bumper's OK though. So, I could do the stock bit and remount the bumper as original with boneyard parts, or fab a hanger that will do the job. As far as that bolt goes - just getting a long hex bolt, snipping the head and heating the shank and folding over in vice will do. I just use my index and ring finger to bend something like that around my middle finger - of course. :D

Pasty63, I have the stamped steel bracket that holds the tire from my '68 if you want it. I don't need it and haven't brought myself to chuck kit yet. Just pay shipping if you need it.
