stripping chrome?
is there any inexprensive way of doing this? i would like to strip the chrome off of my bumper and painting it. i was thinking grinding it or something, but i dont wanna make any nasty grooves. any ideas?

No, not really. The only effective way is to take it to a chrome-plater, and they can de-chrome it.
However, I did some research a while back about this very thing, and was told that if you hit the chrome with a DA (or by hand on the small parts) and rough it up with some 60 or 80 grit aluminum oxide paper it will hold paint. You'll want to spray it with a self etching primer such as Duponts Metal-Etch to get good tooth. You can then prime, prep and paint as you would a normal body panel. Products like "Bulldog" are made to promote paint adhesion on chrome.

You can sand blast bumpers, but I don't know how good the chrome is on your bumper. If it is real rusty and the chrome has let loose in a lot of places it will work fairly good. If not worse case scenario buy a new bumper from LMC for around a $100. I bought a painted one for my truck so I can do some welding on it then have it chromed.
