coating cab mounts

Post by fordman »

i have a cab mount that i will be putting on sometime soon. i wanted to know what you guys thought about putting por15 or whatever on the inside of it before installation. also should i stay away from the tabs on it so that when i weld it on i don't damage it. or would you just leave it alone and weld it on. and only coat the outside of it after installation? this is a factory mount. not a lmc repro.

i would think it wouldnt hurt to coat it, if any moisture gets inside of it its locked in there it will rust threw so its probably a good idea

Are you going to be welding them in? If so, the POR-15 around the perimeter is going to get burned off, which kinda negates the purpose of applying it. If it was me I'd just get 'em good and clean, weld them in, and then coat them with POR-15 afterwards, through the bolt access cover.

Welding them after they are coated will cause the POR to burn off, and the fumes will contaminate your welds.

I don't see why not. Yes, it's going to be a major PIA and you're going to ruin a shirt (since you'd better be wearing long sleeves!) ;) but that's how I'm doing mine. The POR-15 will help seal things up, which wouldn't happen if you burned it off while welding the mounts in.

yeah i figured i'd burn it off if i did it that way. i might coat part of it before i weld and then finish it after i weld that way it won't take as long and i could stay far enough away from the welding surface to not burn it off.

Yep shirt and gloves, and a respirator. I even used a mask deal the 2nd time. I had an allergic reaction to it when I painted (sprayed)my frame and it was a little less severe when I took better precautions the couple times after that. I broke out with a rash on my face and arms, just bumps all over even behind my ears. So watch out!! I'm usually not effected by anything and this stuff did not agree with me.

You'll be good spraying though the inspection hole.

You could coat all but the flanges where you are going to weld with the POR-15 or what ever you had rather use. Then use weld-through primer on the area to be welded. That is about the only thing that will stay when you weld no it.

pour it in the hole then pick up the cab and shake it around in side so it spreads evenly :P or just spray it in there
