I just received my first batch of POR-15 stuff and am ready to play. I plan to use marine clean, metal ready, por-15 and then a topcoat.
I have a few questions about this process - hoping some of you that have messed with this stuff could help me out...
1. If I take something down to bare metal, but will not be ready to paint it for a few days, what should I do? Is it better to go ahead and do the marine clean and metal ready thing, or should I wait and do everything at one time?
2. When planning to topcoat, do you still need to use 2 coats of por-15 like the instructions say on the can? Or is two coats for when there is not topcoat? Couple examples:
Doing the frame with por-15 and then top coat with chassiscoat. Should I do 2 coats of por-15 for this?
Doing the air cleaner assembly with por-15 and then top coat with rattle can duplicolor. Do I really need 2 coats of por-15 for this?
3. I plan to brush not spray. Do you think bristle or foam brushes are better?
Thanks!
Steve

re: (yet another) POR 15 question
When I painted my floorboards, I tried both foam and bristle brushes, and I liked the foam better. It seemed like there were more bubbles when I used the bristle.
They say that for best results, you need to sand the POR-15 coat then apply their self-etching primer before you put on the top coat. Since they want like $17 a can for the primer I used duplicolor self etching primer and it seemed to work OK. I have no long-term results though since I just did this last week.

Thanks - I may try both types of brushes also.
I'm going to do my first run at POR-15 this weekend if it is warm enough - which looking at the forecast may be iffy.
I think the directions said you can topcoat directly over the POR-15, without a primer, if you do so when the POR-15 is tacky and before it dries.

also as i hear from a paint house i visited the other day once you open por 15 especialy if any gets on the lip where the lid seals it'll never seal again and dry out.
so its best to use as close as possable to only what your gonna use for the job.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

Use a piece of plastic between the lid and the can. If any POR gets in the lip it will seal the can permanently shut.
You can topcoat the POR without a tie primer if you top coat when the POR is tacky.
