using POR-15

can you paint por-15 over rust or do you have kill it with a rust converter.
any information would be a help

I never actually used POR-15, but I would recommend getting rid of the rust. Of all the stuff I've researched, it all says to get rid of the rust if possible first. Even though alot of claims are made that the product "neutralizes" the rust by sealing it off from oxygen, why take the chance. Sure, it may look good for a while, but eventually, it would probably come back.

Yes, you do need to neutralize it, but the manufacturer claims that the product actually works better on slightly rusted surfaces than clean metal.

They suggest doing this as a three-step process:

1) Use a wire brush to remove the rough stuff, then use MarineClean to clean and degrease the metal
2) Use MetalReady to provide an etch for better adhesion, which is more important with clean shiny metal than rusted steel
3) Apply the POR-15

it works better on rusted or rough metal, smooth and painted metal needs roughing up to give the por "teeth" to stick to.i have painted both frame and smooth metal with por, i followed their directions and i was very happy.
