I used a round wire brush that attatches to a drill. Worked great. Then you can use a 3M paint stripper, that attatches to same said drill, if you need to go to bare metal.

I've always used a small propane torch to soften that stuff up enough to scrape it off with a thick putty knife, then used a wire wheel attachment in the angle grinder to remove the left-over residue.

I've used the knotted wire wheels on 4 and 4 1/2" grinders a bunch and they work well, BUT you need to be aware if you have any small pinhole at all in the sheetmetal, they will grab and pull it larger in most cases. And, they do throw small needles, so wear safety glasses and long sleeve denim shirt or something. I've had them poke through blue jeans, they do smart. And, I've used the $12 propane bottle kits from Wallyworld too, with putty knife.
of all I've tried, I prefer a heat gun from Wallyworld, they're about $25 with tax (Wagner I think), and look like a hair dryer, chase with flexible blade putty knife, use rags and laquer thinner or mineral spirits after that. I think I like the heat gun best, because you're on your back and it's easy to turn on and off compared to turning a torch on and lighting it and stuff.
I've heard some guys saying oven cleaner works well too, but that stuff stinks and is expensive unless you've just got a really small spot to do.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
