Painting underneath/inside hood

Post by 69rangerman »

What's the best way, product/process to slow down rust and paint inside the hood? Was thinking just about using the same black as the engine compartment.

Thanks

How would you get the por15 inside the hood? Can you just spray it up in there? How would you kill off the surface rust/scale before applying the coating?

probably with the normal por 15 prep, knock off and/or sand off what you can then use the por 15 metal etch product. After that you should be able to just roll it on or whatever. I didnt know if it will spray or if you would want to ruin a sprayer by using that stuff in it. Somebody else might have ideas of how to get into the crevices

I guess I was thinking about using a pc of sandpaper on the end of a stick or fishing rod or something to knock off service rust, then see if there was a way to rattle can, or sponge brush rustoleum or something up in there. Bad idea?

That sounds like a good Idea to me. Anything you can do to stop rust will be worth it. It will be a pain in the butt though!!!!!

I was thinking of that Rust Bullet stuff... you can supposedly spray it, and apply it directly to rusty metal. All you would have to do is knock off the loose scale with a long handled wire brush and maybe a pressure washer, let it dry real good, then spray that stuff all up in there.

http://www.rustbullet.com/Application.htm

Once that stuff has been applied, it turns into a galvanized look. You could then use their "blackshell" application to spray/coat it, or you could just paint up in there when you paint your hood.

I don't know much about this company, but I'm impressed with their belief in their product when they issue challenges like this:
If any of our test subjects have any objections to the testing process, or any other manufacturer of a rust control treatment or coating wants to challenge us, we have the following offer: We will jointly do comparative testing at an accredited independent lab. The loser pays all testing costs and the winner may use the test results in their advertising.

Just my :2cents: ,but check out zerorust.com
It comes in spray cans, which may be good for your application. And I think it's around $8 for a can of it.

the most effective way to get rid of the rust in all of the spaces is to have the hood dipped...takes out anything and everything thats not good metal...then you can shoot your etching primer, primer/surfacer, or por15 if you like over it all and be sure theres no rust

Be careful if you go the sandblasting route. YOu want some one experience to do it. Normally when you do the underneath side you end up with warpage and marks from the braces from underneath on the outside of the hood.

Dipped in what? And how much does something like that cost? Seems it would be an effective way to get into the nooks and crannies...

we did this with our 67 hood and its worked great...its dipped in an acid that strips off any and all paint, rust, filler, etc and leaves you with bare metal to work with...they do coat it with some kind of coating so it can be stored without rusting..ill have to check and see what cost to take it to the dippers...dont remember off the top of my head, ill get back to you

thanks... this is interesting... my truck has a lot of surface rust under the hood up in parts you can't reach with a man's arm. Plus, it has been repainted and it slightly orange peely, so that would be a good way to get rid of it all and clean it up.
