Vin tag rivet ?

Post by rjewkes »

Where do you get a close or even exact looking rivet? and what is the best way to remove the one from your old rusted out door to put on the new donor door?

on my slick i punched the center out with a screwdriver and then crimped it with a pair of pliers. i don't know about any exact replacements.

Here's some, they're similar to a lot of GM's.

i emailed the ebay guy and he said i didn't need a special tool to use these he said just use a center punch to punch out the middle of the rivet. that sounds great to me. if i only had a use for them now. maybe i should get a set or two now.

Slightly off topic, when moving a VIN tag from an original door to a replacement door, what happens when the VIN has paint on it? Maybe the VIN tag wasn't taped off and has green paint on it, and the door is red. Is there a way to remove the paint but not the black ink?

YOu can either use a razor blade and scrape it off real carefully or use some laquor thinner real carefully and clean it up.

Hey all. I used a drill to the back side of the rivot and then glue the rivot head to the plate. It looks like it was never removed. Watch using the thinnners on the plate. I had some bad luck once. It grayed out the print.

I have one I could practice on. I guess I'll see what works best on that one.
