1969 F250 - Smelling gas bad in the cab....
I am getting an awful gas smell continuously in the cab of the truck. I know the weather stripping is bad on the driver's side and I ordered some that I'll put on this weekend. I looked at the tank behind the seat and I can't see anything leaking. This truck has two tanks, but only the one behind the seat works. The gas guage also does not work. Or I should say works when it takes a mind to work. I tightened up the ground wire behind the seat and it started working then went out again. Appreciate any thoughts on this gas smell. Thanks. Your gas smell is caused by a bad filler neck hose and/or bad filler neck grommet (on the cab). Just replace both....if one's gone, the other's not far behind.
When the grommet isn't sealing, any fuel that leaks out when filling the tank (or during normal driving) will find it's way into the cab.

You also have the gasket that seals the sending
unit/float device..It's made out of a cork type
stuff, and can get ratted out if the unit has been
removed to inspect a few times. Also make sure
those 6 fasteners are tight enough. Don't overly
squash the gasket though.. Not *too* tight..
I'd pull that float out and take a look. I almost
bet it's rusting up, and locking into position.
I've had this with mine, and it's starting to do it
again..Need to yank it and clean/repaint. I need to
start keeping it full of gas...I often leave it sitting low,
and lets too much moisture collect.. I'll learn one
of these years.. Be real careful if it is rusted up.
You can break it loose, but you have to be real
careful not to break it. Let it soak in rustbuster a
good while first.. Then when it's free, and moves
easily, give it a shot of paint to seal. For a while..
You can probably use a short hose to locate the
leak. Sniff the two places, "filler area, and float
area", and see which seems strong.

all the above is correct
also, never park your truck with the drivers side lower than the passenger side with a full tank, as gas will leak out, even with a good cap and grommet, and find its way inside.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

If the filler hose is OK, it might be the gas tank selector valve. If it's wet under there, I guess the fumes could make their way into the cab.
