Welding Sheetmetal ??

Post by adak57 »

I did some archive searching and found some good ideas on
welding sheetmetal...

Has anyone had experience with with butt-welding thin metal
with an acetelyne torch??

I don't have a mig setup at this time.
I do have a little buzz-box arc welder, tho.

Would it be better to spot weld with flame or stick? I'm trying for
least amount of warp. Any input on what type of rod to use, if that's the better choice?

Thanks!!!
John

I would use the stick and just spot weld it around to keep from so much heat soak and warping. The torch will apply a lot of heat.

Any suggestions on a type and size of rod? I'm assuming I
want to use at least a 1/16" or do they make smaller?

Thanks!

I have a friend who put all new floor pans and quarter patches in his early bronco entirely with stick welding. Turned out beautiful. I've never tried it as I have a small mig, but it is very doable with stick. He used 1/16" 6013.

Like he said above I would think a 1/16.

Allright!! I'm off to town to get some rod... Thanks for
the input!

How about filling trim holes? Can I use that rod if I back
them up with some copper plate? Or is there a better way?

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Copper doesn't stick to weld but pennies are actually made of nickel and plated with copper so if you get to hot they'll stick. I'd use a roofing nail and insert it from the backside, that way you have a ready made handle that you just grind off.

i duct taped some pennies on the back side of holes and welded them, did not have any problems but they were small holes. nails work good too, i have done that as well.
