Drip Edge.

Post by $500F100 »

My drip edge is pretty rusted out. Has anyone shaved their drip edge? How does it look?

I haven't eve seen a complete drip rail shaved, but I have been wondering the same thing on how it looks. I have only seen some that has been shortened.

I shaved my drip rail because it had a litte rust. The vertical part is just a matter of drilling spot welds and popping the rail off. The horizonal part requires that you weld around the whole top as it is two peices sandwiched togater. Mine has started to rust and crank along the seem. There's to much flex there.

Thanks for the pics. SO what does it entail as far as once there removed to repair what you cut off?

Those are "crazy larry"s pictures. I did a search at the FORDification galleries and came up with those. I searched because I remembered seeing a truck from Australia, New Zealand, or somewhere (had right hand drive) with shaved drip rails. I didn't find those but I found crazy larrys. I can't help with the particulars, sorry.

Thanks for the update on that. I guess I will just have to see for my self when I cut mine off.

This came up a few months back, i haven't done it yet either but from what I remember you simply take a cutoff wheel and have at it. I would guess you would then grind down until relatively flush then tart welding. Probably would be a good idea to spot weld every 3"-5" while you are cutting it off to hold it all together. Weld it up and grind away again until it is nice and flush.

I would like to know if this can be done easily with the windshield intact. My '72 is kinda of my second backup vehicle right now and would hate to half to tear it way down to do something like this. I am afraid the rubber would catch on fire fairly easily around the windshield.

I'm sure it could be done if it was taped with duct tape and the windshield covered to keep from messing up the windshield. Just keep a wet rag on the rubber as we are cutting and welding.

It makes it a lot cleaner and one less place to rust. Another way I look at it is that my truck will have a lot of metal work as far as a smooth inside of the bed, dash welded up, all body seams smoothed, and it just adds to the custom work of making it cleaner looking.
