Removing rear e-brake cables
Is there a special tool or technique to remove the rear emergency brake cables from the brake backing plate? I plan to replace mine with a good used set from another rearend, but don't know how to get the darned things off without breaking the little retaining tabs. I seem to recall someone mentioning a while back that it required a special tool for removal. Anyone know what it looks like and where to get one?

Well, I got the cables out, by sliding the box end of a 9/16" wrench over the cable to compress the tabs which allowed it them to slide out of the backing plate. I could also have used a hose clamp to compress those tabs, but the wrench was faster.
But now I've run into another dilemma that I'm hoping someone can help me with, and that's the routing of main emergency brake cable. Normally, the cable goes from the pedal assembly in the cab, down through the left front cab mount to a bracket on the frame, approximately under the driver's seat. From there, the cable goes straight to the middle of the rear frame crossmember, where it attaches to the two individual rear cables. However, because I'm now using the auxiliary tank, there isn't a straight shot from the frame bracket under the driver's seat on the frame back to the rear frame crossmember. Does anyone know if there's another setup used on trucks with the spare fuel tank? Somehow the main e-brake cable has to get around the tank to reach the rear crossmember, but with the tank in place, the main cable will be too short to go around (or over) the tank. In this pic, #1 is the bolt hole on the frame which holds the e-brake cable bracket. From there, normally it's a straight shot to the lever on the rear crossmember (#2). As you can see, this won't work. Any ideas?

I will email you a scan of the parts illustration. The catalog shows a longer front cable #C7TZ.2853.C (80.05" LONG) on trucks with 25 gallon
floor mounted tank. It also lists a different number for the parking brake equalizer lever# C7TZ.2A605.A on trucks with 25 gallon floor mounted tanks. (you will see these numbers listed in the ill.) The longer front cable mounts to the front corner of the tank.

Your original style cable shows 77.75" long. Not sure of the difference in the equalizer but does have a diff. number for the 25 gallon tank setup. Also the way the ill. looks the front bracket shown in your second photo

That definitely answers the question...my application will require an entirely different front cable. I'll go ahead and give the vendors you listed above a call to see if they have it and what it's going for. However, even if they don't have it, I know where there's another truck in a salvage yard with this tank setup, so I can just get it there.

I could use a new main cable if you have one to sell me- the spiral wire around the outside apparently got weak from my exhaust and split. Now instead of applying my brakes, it balloons the cable housing out...

The numbers listed in any illustration photo(s) are simply called a basic number. All of these numbers will generally (90% OF THE TIME) be the same for all cars and or trucks. 2853 is always a front e-brake cable, a 2A635 number is always a rear cable regardless of application or side. A 2780 is always a e-brake pedal assy etc...........
A text catalog for model application must be referenced for the complete part number.. and after checking the text catalog application and description for this setup on this year and style truck a different part number was issued for the 2A605 part . What the differences are it don't say but in most cases if its a different # it won't interchange. A true Master set of parts catalogs will have 2 books in the set
1) Illustrations catalog (photos with basic numbers only)
2) Text catalog usually a much larger book containing full part numbers
and general descriptions of parts only (no photos in this book)
The second book is the MEAT the first book is just the POTATOES

There seems to be a conspiracy against making it easy to figure out which cables are right for the 131" 1967 f-100 and where to get them. I need the two that go into the brake backing plates. I don't have one of those fancy onder-bed tanks, just the standard in-cab.
