They prevent the rear springs from wrapping up with the torque from the axle under acceleration. Making sure you have no hopping and keeping the wheels on the ground to keep traction. Much better take offs. I kinda like this style...

I also like the ones from RCD on this page. http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/tractionbars.htm

And there is some others on James duff bronco's and Jeffs bronco graveyard. Superlift makes some that are on top of the leaf pack to keep clearance.

re: Ladder bars?
You can acomplish the ame thing with a little less weight if you do something like this...

Those ar from the F-100XL. It was done in the 60's and it ran 12's with ease! You have to have a good lauch to do that!
I plan on a variation or these on my '63.
You want to make sure that what you do does not force bad pinion angles durring suspention travil and articulation.

I need them bad if they do what you say. I have the worst wheel hop ever. I can hop the thing like 1 1/2 feet.

My buddy has ladder bars on his 460 powered Bronco with 35's. We have drag raced, mud bogged, and cleaned out some ditches and the rearend has never gave us a minutes trouble since we installed them. Now before we did we twisted a couple of rears out of it.

Not that I can think of.
I want mine to be a little more discreet.

re: Ladder bars?
Don't know how true it is but I heard that if you use ladder bars on a leaf spring rear suspention, you need to install a rear axle floater kit. I saw some for sale in the Summit catalog item #CEE-2030
