Post by cghstrojan08 »

When I turn my head lights on my parking lights turn off in front. One click on the switch they are on and then when you pull the light switch all the way out they are off. Help please

sounds like normal operation to me.

Yea, on our trucks the parking lights go off when the headlights are on.
Someone posted asomething about how to make them stay onn when the headlights are on, but I can't find it now.

Federal law determined our lighting scheme. In 67 all cars except Chrysler product had to have front marker lights and rear reflectors. In 68 all cars except chrysler had to have front and rear lights and trucks had to have front reflectors. In 69 all car. had to have fulltime parking and side lights. Trucks had to have front and rear reflectors. In 70 trucks had to have full time parking and side lights.

Kid's got it right, the Fed's made the rules.

'70 and up pickups have parking lights that wrap around the side and those were acceptable as side lights too as long as they stayed on with the headlights.

A wiring change in '70 made the parking lights stay on with the headlights. It's not in the headlight switch, they remained the same from the previous year.

They cried that they would go out of business from the high cost of the conversion and the tooling and plastic parts. The federal government kissed their ***. Then when they did come out they were little tiny round elements with large chrome circles around them. The parts came from some aircraft company that decided the light housings were too small to be seen at night. Chrysler just had to go get the yellow lenses made for the front. So the first 500 cars or so had non chrysler part numbers on them.

Yes way too much garbage is in my head.

Dang. Funny however that they almost went bankrupt in the 80's.

Almost would have been prefered to Daimler(these guys made gas chambers for the nazi pow/anti semite camps) Owning them and jeep.

Well Jeep what a history, Willys, Jeep corporation, AMC, then Chrysler and they still spend more time in the shop than any other 4 wheel drive even if they do not go off road.

Barry: so what precisely was changed in the wiring harness? You've provided us with a diagram of how to implement full-time front parking lights on the '67-'69 trucks by running a jumper wire between the tail-light and parking light circuits at the headlight switch connection, but how exactly did the factory do this and where?

wire 285 and 984 plus 985 on the diagram is where the the factory did it. To do it right find dual element socket repair pieces and put the dual socket in the place of a single socket after prying the single socket gently loose.

:hmm: The parking lights are already dual sockets, one socket for the parking light and the other socket for the turn signal.

The factory changed the wiring right at the headlight switch. Wire 285 is the rear taillights and remained the same thru all years, connecting to the same 'taillight' pin on the headlight switch thru all years. The change is with the front, for '67-'69 wire 11 is the front parking lights and connects to a separate 'parking light' pin on the headlight switch that is only on in the 'park' position. '70 and later renamed wire 11 front parking lights to wire 984 (they're the same parking lights) and that same wire is piggybacked onto taillight wire 285 which has always been connected to the taillight pin of the headlight switch. The parking light pin of the headlight switch is not used anymore and has no wire connection to it.

What I did on the sketch is jumper the parking light pin to the taillight pin. If you wanted to be factory correct, you would cut the wire 11 off at the parking light pin and splice it into wire 285 at the taillight pin. Both mods work the same way, the jumper mod doesn't backfeed into the parking light pin because the pin is floating when it's not hot. I like the jumper mod because you never actually cut a factory wire, call me weird.
