Turn signals and instruments.

Post by drosera88 »

You may have seen in other posts my problems with turn signals. I changed my instruments from lights to gauges. I don't recall if my signals worked then or not, since I never drove it with the old instruments (didn't have licence) and did not drive for some time with the new instruments. Do you think the swap could have affected something, or should I be looking elsewhere for the problem? I have changed flashers (and replaced fuses), yet the turn signals only glow.

Any help is appreciated.

When you changed instrument panels, did you also change the wiring harness? Full-instrumentation panels use a different wiring harness that contains a shunt that powers the ammeter...that's the main difference, there are also a few others.

Turn signal problems are common in the bump side trucks as all power for blinking lights goes through the turn signal switch in the column.

First check all grounds and check all bulbs and their sockets in the front and back. Check the wiring harnesses for any obvious breaks or previous repairs that have failed. Clean and make repairs as needed.

Then, check the turn signals. If signals work your done. If not, does the turn cancel work? If not, then you probably need to replace the switch. Check the emergency flashers to see if they work.

Changing to instruments should not affect the turn signals. The only wires from the turn signals to the panel are the turn indicator lights. As mentioned, you do have to make other changes in the wiring to use gauges rather than idiot lights.
