Master Cylinder For Breaks
Ok, I had my breaks re-done while I was in Iraq, and the guys that did them switched my lines, reversing the reservoirs putting the big reservoir to my back breaks. Anyhow after almost killing a family in a van and myself, and figuring out what they had done, I switched the lines and than bleed the brakes. With a combination of sitting and the reversed lines my master cylinder went out. I think. Could that cause the compressor hooked to my master cylinder to go out as well?? The new master cylinder that I just got, I can’t get it to bleed out, it is sucking air from somewhere. I can get the back breaks to work, but the front breaks wont bleed out. I am thinking that I have purchased a bad Master Cylinder, because it is sucking air from somewhere. Any advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated… Oh!! And I am finally back in the states…
Thanks in advance!!!

Did you bench bleed the master cylinder before you installed it?

so when youbleed the front brakes you just get air coming only? if so keep bleeding them it has to come out sooner or later or you could have a line plugged. we had it happen to us in a dodge rampage once. we took the line off at the disc brake caliper and pushed the brake real hard until the plug blew out. we rebleed the brakes and they worked fine after that.

Big D how do you bench bleed a master cylinder?? Fordman, I get fluid and air. But it never stops, I have ran more than 2 bottle's throught the master cylander. I have installed a new booster on the truck, but I have to get someone to help me bleed the breaks this weekend. Hopefully that works, because right now I am taking shots in the dark. All the parts on the breaks are brand new except for like 4 rubber lines. If this doesn't work I will probably take it and have those changed. Thanks for any more advice I could be given...

since it is already on you will have to bleed the system more to get the air out of the master cylinder. if your getting both air and fluid that seems to be the problem. if you want to take it off you can just take the lines off the cylinder and pump the pedal until nothing but fluid comes out in a steady stream.

To bench bleed a master cylinder, go to the parts store and get some fittings that screw into you master cylinder wher the lines go, and then run some clear tubing up to the master cylinder and into the reservoirs. Make sure the ends of the tubes are completetly submerged. Then have someone pump the brake pedal until you have only brake fluid, with no bubbles, in the tubing. Then reinstall the brake lines and bleed the system.
If you can find a shop with the proper equipment, have them power bled. That is where the shop puts an adaptor on the MC and uses air pressure to force brake fluid through the lines. Do NOT attempt that at home, though. It takes special equipment and can be dangerous if not done right.

Theres a easy way. Get a clean oil can. The kind you put oil in and
squirt it out. Fill it with brk. fluid. Put a 2' length of 11/32" vac hose
on it. Leave the lid loose on the master cyl. Loosen a bleeder on the
rear and pump the fluid in with the oil can. Close the bleeder and move
to the other side and repeat. Now do the same on the front axle. All the
air in the lines will be chased up thru the master cyl. and come out.
You can bleed the whole system in under 5min. alone this way.
It's how I do it.
