caulk or weld

Post by Fossil Dawg »

I have some rust issues under my drip rail just above the windshield rubber, in different spots along that line. Would I be safe, (water tight), if I just used caulking sealer or do I need to weld? Yes the rust put holes all the way thru. :( Any help is appreciated.

I don't know if I would weld inside the drip rail or not. I would probably clean up the spots real good, spray some rust convertor in there, and try to braze them with some silicon bronze rods. This may not be the easiest method but it woud prevent punching through with the welder and creating bigger holes. Also the bronze rods are better hole fillers.

I would probably just use fiberglass mat and resin after grinding them clean and treating them with rust convertor.

TIG welding with stainless steel rod would work well. TIG welding doesn't put in as much heat as the others (MIG, arc, gas) therefor cutting down on warpage. The Stainless steel rod will burn out more impurities thus making a stronger weld :2cents:
