transmission hump question

Post by 55vicky »

My truck has the lower transmission hump. Am I going to have to make it
taller to accept the np435?
Thanks, Dave

Yes. Trucks with FMX/C4 automatics and 3-spd manuals got the solid transmission hump , while C6 and 4-spd trucks got the bolt-on cover which raised the hump up several inches to clear those large transmissions. You'll have to cut out the factory hump to allow you to bolt on the taller cover.

You will need to cut it out and get one of the bolt in humps that the trucks with 435's had.

Thanks for the picture Keith, and now that I looked at it looks the same height as mine. I have a C6, tranny cover has the dog leg, PO put in a floor
shift and it doesn't protrude from the hump, it's flush. So maybe it's ok
after all. Haven't had the original floor covering up yet to see if it has the
bolt on cover.
I wonder why the data plates have all the different manual trannys listed
but only says automatic for the "G" code? The reason I mention that if my
truck was built with a 302, one would think it would have a C4 and maybe
the lower tranny hump, especially with a column shift (it still has the shift
bowl for column shifter. Did they put C6's behind 302's?
Thanks, Dave
BTW, I posted on the meeting place finally

i'm sure they did put c6 behind 302. they are a small block 302. but it depends on the year of your truck though. 302 came out in late 69 in our trucks.

They simply state 'Cruise-o-matic' in the codes, since that shows it came with one of the several automatic transmissions in the Cruise-o-matic family.

More than likely your 302 would have been equipped with a C4, though as fordman stated it's possible to have had a C6 with the small-block bellhousing bolt pattern, but not likely.

C6 trannies will fit under the stock floorpan, so it's not really necessary to cut it, but it's a very tight fit. As you can see from the pic above, the 4-spds definitely needed the taller hump.

I thought the first year F100/150 with a 302/C6 combo was '79. :hmm:

Really? I honestly had no idea, I was just assuming otherwise. (Of course, that's gotten me into trouble before!) ;)

Thanks Barry....very interesting. I'll definitely remember that. In fact, I'm going to add that to the Did You Know box. :D So just to make sure I have my facts straight, prior to '79 all small-block automatics were the C-4, correct?

Don't quote me yet, it could really be '78. My info for that year is a little shy and doesn't show it but I've heard of some and Fordman adds to that list. For sure not in '77 or earlier and for sure '79 and later. :D

So, prior to that the 302 would have either a C4 or starting in '74 an FMX.

If you cut out the solid floor, what are the mounting options for the bolt on cover? Will tabs have to be fabricated?

you will need something to put a cover back on with. or if your real good cutting it out you can cut tabs out of the floor panel that is there. drill holes use the j nuts and put a cover on. i think it could be done but you would need time and patience.

I agree, just cut the floorpan out like the factory would have done it, around the molded-in tabs that are already there. Then just drill a hole in the center of each tab and slide a J-nut on, and bolt the cover down.

Here's a couple pictures I shot while repairing and sandblasting a cab, that shows how the factory-cut hole should be. The first pic shows the bottom of the cab, while it was up on it's back and I was replacing some cab supports:

...and this picture was taken inside the sandblast booth, when I was about 99% done with the blasting:

Ok so let me get this straight guys the only difference between the high hump and low is the cover added or deleated at factory going down the line.
