Master cylinder help

Post by JB4020 »

I have a '71 f100 that had manual brakes. The master cylinder was bad and i wanted to put a booster on so i got both off a truck in the junk yard. My question is with the master cylinder because it is different from my previous one and the spots where the brake lines screw in are reverse in size. The line with big nut went on the front of the old master cylinder and the line with the little nut went on the back of the old cylinder. Do i need to just get an adapter to keep the lines in there original places or will it work the way i have it. Also with this master cylinder work correctly it looks different.

If it has drum brakes on the front it don't matter if you switch the lines.
If it has disks then it does.

Can't help you with the year, but it's definitely a drum-brake master cylinder, since both reservoirs are the same size. If the rear reservoir (which goes to the front brakes) was larger, than it would be for discs, and not useable for drums.

Did you get it hooked up and working?

Hmm....well, AFAIK the booster-to-pedal rod is part of the booster and can't normally be replaced. But I haven't ever actually tried, so I could be wrong.
