D60 probs

Post by 460 crew »

Ok here is the question at hand in my driveway. My rear diff cover looked as if someone went to town with some cutters and a hammer. What lets loose in the D60 and lets the ring gear eat up the cover from the inside. I have had a little vibration for a while and suspected the gears a little worn. The funny thing is everything is still bolted up snug and don't see anything but normal wear going on in there along with the metal shavings off the cover and some small scuffs on the corner of the cogs on the ring gear.

My little sister was driving the truck today so I have no Idea really how or when it took a dump, but it was near empty because the holes were at the lower end of the the cover. I noticed the trail of gear oil in the street in front of the house and decided to take a look.

I called for quotes for rebuilding the 60 and have a rough estimate of 400-800 depending on what all it needs but I may just take a spare D60 from a 79 I junked that had a LS in it and cut off the spring pads and shock mounts and weld them into the correct places for the highboy.

Any insight on my delima?

Man you can't have any luck lately, can ya??!
I'd bet you'll find the problem as soon as you tear it apart. kinda sounds like the pinion grenaded to me, but I don'tknow much about diffs. maybe shake the pinion yolk and see how loose it is??

One of the side bearings spun allowing the carrier to travel sideways. Find another rearend. yours will probably be junk.

  Gotta laugh or it might be a little more irritating but yes a little bit of a bad streak with the truck and I have only been driving it maybe like one day out of the week and things just keep happening. between the truck and my day to day issues lately it's a little tiring, keepin my chin up though things could always be worse. :D not having a bumpside to wrench on.

Thanks Heep, should I be able to move it around with the wheels off the ground?

If it is bad enough you should be able to pry the carrier from sise to side. Pull the carrier and look for damage. Just remember which and how many shims went on the sides.

Mine spun and I didn't catch it tell the carrier was pulled. The carrier ate a 1/4" into the housing where it meets the axle tube.

I've seen spider gears shatter as well and get caught up in the ring... :(

All is fixed I threw the 79 D60 that I had in storage and had to remount the spring pad perches and welded new shock mounting tabs on there. Turned out the new rear has 4:10 gears with trac lok, I belive the clutches are worn in it but it gets the job done. So I still need to have the 4:10 set in the front D60 when money is not in such high demand around here. :D
