Added helper springs to my F350

Post by FLATBEDFORD »

I bought a set of helper springs from an 80's F350 off ebay. They are an exact bolt on fit for my bumpside. It seems Ford used the same perches for quite a while. They are the same on my '96 too. I think that the Superduty uses a different setup. I don't know if the 1/2 and 3/4 ton bumpsides have the holes in the frame or not. The hardest part was getting the rivets off the perches. I had to buy new U bolts, not just because of the rust, but because the old ones are too short. The truck now has 11 leaves in the main spring, and 4 more in the helpers. The ride, when unloaded, is unaffected. I'm guessing that this would bring my MGVW up to 10,000lbs from 8300lbs. An easy upgrade.
I think this is a link to a photobucket album. If you view it as a slideshow it should be in order.

My F-250 4x4 has the holes for the perches.
I took a set of springs from an f-350 and put them on my truck. Like you, I had to replace the U-bolts due to length. But I also needed to keep the lift blocks.
Then I had to do it all over when I put the dana 70 rear axle in.
In life many men take the path of righteousness, some take the path many others follow (G.M. owners, for example), some take a more arduous path, some a simpler path. I, sir, took the PSYCO-PATH!!

The '68 F100 that I pulled a set from only used 3 of the four bolt-holes in the frame brackets. I compared that frame to the '72 SWB F100 frame I have and the three holes are there as well...I'll just have to drill one hole if I decide to use all four, which I probably will.
