Long time until 3rd.

Post by nikon4u »

I have a 67 352 with an AMX or maybe a MX auto trans, and in the morning it sometimes takes a mile or so until it hits into 3rd. It doesn't matter if it is slow driving or on the highway. When it does hit, it is a slow change over. It also hesitates getting into reverse. These problems seem to be getting worse, and my truck is my work truck so I don't have time to just try everything in the book. If anyone can help it would be great and I will put you on my Christmas card list  .

You have a MX transmission that is experiencing "morning sickness". Basically the seals have hardened up and are leaking internally. After the transmission warms up they become a little more pliable. Nothing you can do except start saving for a rebuild. In the meantime you could try some transmission additive that softens seals but don’t get your hopes up, most of the time it doesn’t do much good. Sorry, wish I had better news.

I had a 79 Bronco that did the same thing.I put a product called Trans X,it helped a lot,but unfortunatly the seals give out and had to get the trans rebuilt. It might buy you some time so you can find another good used trans,or take some time off to take it out and have it rebuilt. :(

Oh, and when I am up to speed, and I go down a hill, I hear pop pop pop from my exhaust. Near the engine, not through the carb or the tail pipe. What does that mean?

Man,I really haven't a clue on how much :(To save some money,You could take it out your self. I would call around to reputable repair shops and get some estimates. The popping sound could be an exhaust leak at the manifold to head or to the pipe.It could even be a crack in the manifold itself as they are bad to do that over alot of years of use.

Well...

A lot of shops don't know what they're doing when it comes to a MX, FX or FMX. If they do, it will be more expensive like around 1K.

If it were me, I'd find a C6 to replace it instead.

If you want to drive 4 hours north, I have a C6 and the driveshaft you can have for helping me get them out of the basement. The C6 will need rebuilt.
Let me know.

I have a C-6 from a late 80's van, would it work? There was a number on it: S-94A

Fellow Red Green Supporter,
How much would it cost to have it rebuilt?

I don't know what's wrong with the tranny. I got it from Keith. I don't recall where he said he got it. I would guess it could be done for a grand.
As far as the C6 from the van, you would need to swap tailshafts. The van most likely has a slip yoke, and the truck, if a long bed, has a bolt on yoke. Or yopu could find a driveshaft shop to put a slip yoke on the end of your driveshaft. I don't know if the tailshaft from the FMX will fit the C6 or not.

I didn't think they made a fmx with a fe bolt pattern. I don't think the tranny out of the van will bolt to your 352 as the last fe was used in 76. It's either a smallblock or a 460 bolt pattern.

The FMX was definitely available with the FE bolt pattern. It's the automatic transmission that was used early on. In fact, the '67 CS that I parted out recently had one. That's not the one I gave to flyboy though...I don't recall which parts truck that one came from.

Nikon, If it makes you feel any better the C-6 in my '68 has been doing the same thing for a couple of years and is still running strong. It's a nuisance and a waste of fuel but since she's not my daily driver anymore I've learned to live w/ it for now. I works perfect once she's warm. besides I'd rather spend the money on air bags, and once I swap the 460 in, that tranny won't be needed. Good luck, and go get some trans X, it helps a lot! I just have to re-up every six months or so.

-Also the C-6 bellhousing is part of the trans and cannot be removed.
They're series specific one for the 335 series, 385, and FE
