Removing Manual Steering Box

Post by derek7871 »

I believe I can get to one of my broken exhaust manifold bolts if I remove my manual steering box. Like most things on this truck, I have never done this before. Are there any tricks that I need to know, or can I just take it off and put it back on? '68, 4x2, 360.

use a tie rod end remover to ...well, remove the tie rod. unless you are doing a steering rebuild, then you can just hit the side of the toe rod with a big hammer a couple times to pop it loose. don't forget to loosen the nut first!

Will it be necessary to remove the TRE if I'm just needing to get the steering box out of the way a little bit so I can get to the manifold bolt?

it won't move a whole lot unless you take off the tire but it might. i would play it by ear to see if it will work ot not and go from there.
