tranny flush?

Post by marz68 »

I have changed the tranny fluid on many automatic transmissions but was wondering if by just draining the pan will this also drain the torque converter cause there is plenty of fluid in there. Is this the right way to do this or should it be hooked up to a machine that pushes the old fluid out of the torque converter with pressure and new fluid at the same time... you know by hooking it up to the return line and out the other. I need help!

Draining the pan doesn't drain the torque converter. What I did was first drain the pan and then put it back with a new gasket and refill it with new fluid. Then I removed the cooling return line from the trans and clamped on a long piece of clear plastic tubing (you can get this at Home Depot.) I run the end of the tubing into a 5 gallon bucket and start the truck. Whenever about a quart has emptied into the bucket I add a quart and just keep doing this until clean fluid comes out the tube. You can tell the difference right away with the clear tubing. I just had my kid sit in the drivers seat and shut it off when I said to.

Since you are in California you could easily hire an illegal or two for less money than having the kid.

Have you seen the flush machines they have at the quick lube joints? They hook up one side of the trans cooler to a hose and the other side to a hose. There is a clear cylinder that has clean fluid in the top. The bottom fills up with dirty fluid and the clean fluid goes back. Looks neat and makes the customer feel like something really good happened. You could do the same thing by connecting the other line to a tub of clean fluid and run till the approiate 10 qts were consumed. Just an idea.

I replied to this once, must have gotten lost.
My C-6 has a pipe cap on the front of the TQ to drain it. When I installed my shift kit, I drained the TQ this way. then installed the SK, and refilled per instructions. worked fine.

i work a merchants tire and auto part time . it costs about $80 to do a flush that includes 16qts fluid and a trans flush kit.(kit includes a cleaner and a fluid additive) go to a shop with your own fluid and let them do it . the machine they use has a small pump that puts the fluid in while the trans pumps out the old fluid. it takes about 15-20 min. tops. i do them all the time , very easy job with the rite tools.

You're right about ease. I had this done once but it costed me like $120. Then I read an article by someone who said that your trans has a pump in it so you can do it yourself. I figured I saved $100 and it still took about the same 20-30 minutes.

I think I saw a plug on my TQ when installing the trans, I will check it out.

My brother used to work at Jiffy lube and he told me that they hooked one side of the return line to a pump to push out all the old fluid and topped it of when done, but since I don't have that pump I would like to do this the old shade tree mechanic way. :D

Had a funny joke about how many mexicans does it take to lub a trany, but lost it to an error when I tried to post... :dk:
It was a little long winded so I can't retype it. I don't remember it.
The mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Any way, I hope you figure it all out Marz.
