bright trim question for Keith

Post by 69rangerman »

Hey Keith (or anyone else who's done this) , I've bought some lye at the local hardware store in 16oz. bottles. On the tech page for restoring alum. tim you mentioned 2 containers in 3 gal. water. Will this work OK.

You're warning about is lye is appreciated, I remembered it when I saw an actual skull and crossbones on the label.

Worked well for me on my bezels so far. Took about 10-15 min each to take all the anodizing off.

Do you remember how much or many bottles and what size per gallon of water? The stuff was kind of pricey and I don't want to waste too much. Will the same batch of water/lye do everything or is there a point at which it stops working/reacting and needs a new batch?

Thanks
Tom

Be careful!!! We have used it alot of trim and it seems only to work good when it is cooking. Other pieces like the grill did not turn out good when I brushed it on. I planned on trying the crystals on the grill and pour water over it to see if that works. Good luck. John
