steering is starting to whine when hot

Post by dablack00 »

I can drive for about 20 minutes, then the steering starts to whine (pump?) and the steering gets tougher. Is this due to heat? Will a power steering fluid cooler help?

thanks

MIght help.

Yeah, they whine sometimes, but the steering shouldn't get tough.

Could be the pump is sucking in air somewhere and causing the fluid to foam.

That would make it whine and hard to steer.

Could also be that the pump is worn out.

Mine never gets tough but it whines alot expecally after long drives. Sounds like when you take an newer model car and turn the wheel all the way while sitting still that "tshhh" sound.
Never had a problem with tuff steering so i figured it was normal..

get a newer style pump, they don't wine.

i've heard of somebody that was tired of the wine, so he went out and bought a GMC power steering pump, made a braket, and it never whined again

probably a dumb question but is your fluid high enough? or have you changed the fluid recently and flushed the system?. your pump could be going out but i wouldn't go out and buy a new one just yet. Inspect all you lines and the case to see if you have any leaks, because like spartman said you oculd be sucking air.

Ditch the Thompson pencil-neck PS pump and go with a Saginaw...it's a much better unit. Read the following thread for more info:

Ok guys. A little more info. I'm not running a stock pump. I've got a 1996 E350 460 in my 71 short bed. I used the serpintene assecories, brackets, pulleys, everything. I did have to find the right belt lengths (yes, two belts on a serp system for a 460), because I'm not running the smog pump (I took it off) or the AC (yet).

It also took me a while to find lines that would fit the new pump and hook up to the box. Maybe the line I found isn't work right anymore. Who knows. I will take a look.
