Vibration

Post by 460 crew »

Ok everyone I have a vibration on the 70 crew. It was not there before the fire and the tranny was rebuilt. I have since the fire.

Installed the C6 (rebuilt) with a new torque converter
Replaced the Ujoints. Greased slip joints
replaced rear seal on the transfercase output and seal on the rear axle input and a new bearing (old bearing was fine though), They were leaking previously to the ordeal.
I have tried rolling the intermediate shaft between the tranny and case 180 degrees with no luck. It was the only one removed in the tranny replacment. So everything was put back the way it was and only thing different is the tranny beeing rebuilt. All the nuts on the transfercase and tranny are tight that hold the yokes on. I'm just lost for fixes unless something in the tranny is not right but it shifts perfect.

Anyone have any other ideas?

When I was messing around with c4's before going to the 460/c6 I had a torque convertor that was out of balance like ToughOldFord said.
It was'nt so bad that it was undriveable but bad enough.

Guess it could be but the tranny shop will be figuring it out on their dime if everything else on the outside is good. Just bites, this truck has always run really smooth and has not been the same since the tranny rebuild. The vibration is just enough to irritate you and it comes and goes at different speeds.

Could it be that when the driveshaft was put back together the the u-joints were not timed.

:yt: I was going to suggest that the U-joints were out of phase. They should look like this:

I agree about the joints, look a little closer and make sure the joints are centered and aligned.
If it were a torque converter problem you would be able to feel this vibration with the truck in park and just increase engine speed slowly/incrementally untill you get the vibe. if nothing then its not a torque converter vibration. at this point it has to be something that is only spinning when the truck is moving. oh well just my :2cents:

The drive line never got taken apart at the slip-joint so the u-joints are still in proper location. The guy at the local Carquest said that maybe the last tail bearing in the tranny is to blame? I dunno I'll have to take it to the shop that rebuilt the tranny and see if they can figure it out on their time.

All I can say is was a testy PITA. My one last attempt at getting it right by myself before going to the shop tomorrow and I'll be shocked to find out the vibration has been taken care of.

I decided to un strap the ujoint that is connected to the trans and roll the yoke on the trans 180 and put it back on...even though the yokes look symmetrical it was worth a shot. Strapped it back up and the freakin thing is like a new truck! Sometimes it just tries your patience. :) Thanks everyone for your help.

I know you found the problem but my suggestion woulda been the CB or carrier bearing as mine would vibe bad at 65+mph And down at 35mph.

The 4wd F250 shortbeds don't have any carriers their all straight shot drivelines with slip joints towards on end for the compression and extension of the shaft. On the divorced transfercase setups you have a short shaft between the trannt and xfer case and then one from the xfer case to the rear axle and one to the front.

My 77 4x4 crew has a carrier because that rear shaft is longer due to the married xfer case.

Cool Did not know that. Learn something new every day. but if it was 2wd a carrier is a possable culprit.
