so I got the '80 4x4 in the shop, and I found the drivers floor to be rusted thru. Since this is not going to be a show truck, mostly a daily driver and off-road beater, I'm not too concerned with looks.
I made a patch panel from the hood off another truck, but I really don't want to cut out the floor to install it. Can I neutralize the rust and weld the new panel over it, then use an undercoating top and bottom?
I know its the easy way out, but I ain't the greatest welder and don't want to weaken the floor and go thru it during a hard off-road run.

why not just pop rivet it in place?

well, I have a wire-feed welder and really need the practice

Use flux core wire if yopu do this. Mig welding rusty metal causes too much porsity.

If you want the practice welding, bite the bullet.. cut out the thin/rusted metal. Match the patch panel to the shape and weld it in.
That will give you much more practice and skill level matching up the edges and trimming them flush that just welding a panel on top of existing metal.

HEHE....yea but the wife will kill me, as she will be driving this truck!
I might end up with a panel flanger to make it a little stronger, and use the QUAD sealer mentioned in another post.
I'll save the welding practice for things less of a safety issue.
BTW, this truck will probably be used in the local tough truck competitions, so she'll quit telling me to enter my bumpside!
