Bendix Box and Steering Shaft length problem...

Post by Vermonter 67 »

I replaced the manual box with the Bendix box, but the bendix box pushed the steering wheel about an inch into the cab. I have loosened the firewall clamp and the under dash brackets but I am still about a half an inch off, enough so that the turn signal won't auto switch off etc. If i drill out the under dash bracket slots about a 1/4 inch more it will work.
Am I going to run into any problems doing that?

Has anyone else had this problem.

It is a 67 truck, formerly manual steering, now with a Bendix box, auto, 2wd.

Any suggestions?

THANKS!
Martin

Is the s spring that needs compressing, or a different rag joint needed?

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I believe the shaft itself is different.

My understandong is thet the Bendix box and the manual steering box both use the same shaft, and that you only need to change it for the Saginaw box.

Yes?No?

OK, got that sorted. Seems instead of loosening the housing clamp to have some more room to move around in I loosened the shaft bushing clam by the rag joint. All back to normal now.

Thanks
