What makes a Camper Special special?

Post by flyboy2610 »

I've been wondering what makes my F250CS different from a regular F250?
Is it heavier springs and axles? I heard once that a CS is an F250 with F350 running gear, but is that true?
I do know mine has an 8 lug Dana 60 with 3.73 gears.

Check out Page 8 and Page 9 of the '69 factory brochure, it'll tell you all the neat things a CS would have come with. Some are CS-only items, while others were considered standard on the CS while being an option on other trucks.

Thanks for the links, Keith. That's good info.
I guess what I'm really trying to find out is what Ford did to give some F250's a higher GVW than other F250's.
http://www.fordification.com/data-1969.htm
This page lists F250's with 7,500; 6,100; and 6,900 GVW'S.
Is it heavier springs/axles, reinforced frames, etc.? :?

I think it is just suspension that allows for the different GVW's on the F250's. And they might have come with better tires.

Just stiffer springs, some with additional overload springs. The frames are the same.

Yep, it's all in the springs. Actually, the CS's came
in either 6900 or 7500 GVW. The lowest was 6100, but they didn't make CS's of that rating. The 6100
used a 1650lb rear spring. The 6900, a 1950lb rear
spring.
The 7500 used a 2450lb rear spring. The CS's were
more in the options than the GVW. My f-250 is a
7500 lb, but it's not a camper special. The 6900
and 7500 versions also used HD brakes. What the CS offered was more in the options like HD radiator,
extended pipe, wiring harness, duel horns, gauges
instead of idiot lights, etc... Mine is a 7500, but is
about as plain jane as you can get.. Basically, a
HD work truck. F-350's ranged from 6600 to 10,000
lb's GVW, depending on springs, single or dually rear
tires, etc..
