Noisy P/S Pump Fix?

Post by 69rangerman »

I've been tracking down a noise lately and it is coming from the P/S Pump. I know because when I loosen or tighten the belt the noise changes. After about a minute after starting the engine a ticking starts coming from the pump. It's buggin me cause the exhaust sounds so good but when you're around the hood all you hear is the ticking. Does the pump have a bearing that can be replaced or should I just replace with a reman.?
Thanks,
Tom

for the price of a new pump (60-80 bucks round these parts) you would be better off, I dont even know where you could find a repair piece as most pumps are replaced as a whole unit.

Also keep in mind that these Ford 'pencil-neck' Thompson pumps are noisy as a whole anyway, especially if you do any spirited street driving or off-roading...or even if you're just trying to work your way into a parking spot. From what I understand they tend to aerate easily and are very susceptible to debris, but a filter could take care of a lot of that. I read a lot of other forums, and in general these pumps aren't well-liked, not only due to the noise but how easily they can be overloaded. Swapping to a Saginaw pump fixes both these problems, but since Ford only used them on the 351M/400 engines in cars and vans, you'll have to be creative in adapting brackets to mount one on your engine.

More often than not, though, the complaint isn't a ticking, but more of a whining, and many folks report that more often than not getting a remanufactured pump that doesn't whine or howl is a crapshoot....you might go through 3 or 4 before finding one that's quiet.

heck , long time ago a buddy of mine had a mid 70's f100, he got tired of the ford pumps and made brackets and installed a gm pump. he had the truck for years after that and not a problem.

Yeah that's what I figured. It works fine though. I guess I'll have to get that CD player installed and create a different noise to hear!
Thanks.

Ya sure it's the pump making all the noise? Remove the belt and see if the noise goes away.

That looks like it'll be one wild ride (or sleeper) when you're done. Neat picture...I got a long way to go.

I'll make sure it's the pump and take the belt off tonight.

Thanks.

On these sag boxes could you pull one from another make and use it with some either correct brackets or have some made?

Of course you do know what other bowtie specific make I am talking about.

I've been looking into this myself, and have found that the Saginaw pump was really only used on Ford 351M/400 engines. It doesn't appear as if they ever put one of these on a small-block or an FE, so mounting this pump on one of these engines will require fabricated bracketry.

I'm going to be installing a GM Hydroboost brake setup on my 4x4 sometime in the future, which was removed from a '82 Ch*vy crewcab dually diesel. It used the Saginaw pump, so I'll be fabricating bracket (or at least modifying what I have) to mount it onto a 390. But that project's a ways into the future...not too high on the list of priorites right now.

I was just thinking since the GM products are so plentiful in the junkyards that if they are the same as the Saginaw pump that ford put on the 351M/400's why not use one?

The Saginaw pump is a major improvement over the Thompson pump. By all means, if you can get one mounted, definitely use it.

Cool!!!!

I know of a big pasture full of rusting chevy's that would love to donate a pump for the cause.

I am going to assume that the threads on the chevy sag pumps are the same as the fords?

That I don't know. Guess there's one way to find out, right? ;) Let us know what you try it. If not, I'd be willing to bet that the lines for the Saginaw pump from a Ford van could work, depending on it's length.

Regardless, it would be fairly easy to have custom hoses fabbed up at a hydraulic shop, if needed.
