Steering Box ID?

Post by Yota »

so you may have seen my post about engine castings in the 'engine' section, and know the story about the guy trying to tell me my truck was something it's not. well, another one of his things was the power steering setup. he said that there's no way this is factory and it's something that someone 'cobbled together', and he was trying to convince me it's not safe to drive... i now know his word and integrity is worth nothing, but it got me wondering what kind of setup i have, since i can't think of any other trucks i've seen this on.
it's power steering, not a power assist, can anyone ID this?

the box sits outboard of the frame rail, and the linkage goes across at an angle, then joins up to the column. this shot is looking sideways down the engine compartment, master cylinder is on the left, engine is on the bottom of the pic...

Did ya kick him in the nutz? Really... cause he diserves it. It looks like power steering from a later 70's truck. As long as the splines are still there on the joint at the box.. then it should be perfectly safe.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to respond to this thread after I got back from junkyarding and looking at a few other PS setups.

I don't know. The box looks like a standard 2WD box, except that it's set up to mount to the outside of the frame. The '67-'72 4WDs never had PS, and the only '73-'79 trucks that had true PS (and not the power-assist) were the '78-'79 which were on the outside of the frame, but the sector shaft on those was much shorter. Yours is longer, and you can see where someone added an 'extension' to the bottom of the frame for the lower bolt.

I will add that while I know the '78-'79 F150 PS boxes were mounted outside the frame, I'm not sure about the F250/F350 versions.

I guess at this point I'd want to look at the box and see if there were some numbers or other identifying marks to get an idea of what it was, and then from those try to figure out what it might have been used on originally.
